Field visit to Jizzakh and Syrdarya regions
On June 28-29, the field monitoring visits to Jizzakh and Syrdarya regions were organized within the framework of EU funded project “Sustainable Development in Rural Areas of Uzbekistan”. Support to development of horticulture Value Chain is one of the main area of Project intervention in these regions, Therefore, the visits were organized to witness the current status and the progress of the Project, as well as meeting with Project partners and local stakeholders to discuss the impacts of the implemented activities.
On the 28th of June the Delegation of the European Union in Uzbekistan represented by Programme Manager for Rural Development, Mr. Jean Louis Veaux along with the Deputy Head of Department of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Ms. Feruza Abdusamatova accompanied by Project team met with the First Deputy Khokim of Jizzakh region, Mr. Ganisher Mamatkulov. During the meeting the Project outcomes and further cooperation possibilities were discussed.
After the meeting, the group visited the Project démonstration site - commercial high density cherry and pear production with the use of modern micro sprinkler irrigation system in Almazar village run together with Jizzakh branch of Research Institute for Horticulture, Viticulture and Winemaking named after Academic M. Mirzayev. This visit followed by stopover in Tree Grafting facility of the institute, where a new mechanical bench grafting machine was installed by the Project to introduce and demonstrate innovative tree grafting technologies. In addition, bench grafting tree grafting technology will strengthen the tree grafting and propagation capacity of the institute. By the end of the day the group was hosted by the apple growers’ cooperative “Baxmal Meva” established with Project initiative in Bakhmal village, where the Project has established a horticulture service facility with up to dated orchard machinery. The main goal of the service facility is to provide horticulture services like, spraying, land preparation, orchard floor management, agronomic consultation and horticulture capacity building trainings to its members and other farmers with limited machinery resources.
The visit to Jizzakh region ended with organization of Steering Committee meeting on the 29th of June. In the course of the meeting Steering Committee members were given a close look to project progress based on monitoring report and also shared with first impressions from the field visit.
After a Steering committee meeting, the group headed to Syrdarya region where a field visit started with meeting at Syrdarya Khokimiyat with Deputy Khokim responsible for investment, Mr. Avaz Xodjiyev.
Further, the representatives of the Delegation of the European Union in Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Economy and the management team of the Project met with Mr. Muhsin Xodjiyev rector of the Gulistan State University where Project established a soil nutrient analysis laboratory to help the farmers to understand their soil conditions and efficiently plan their fertilizer plans for optimum plant growth and increase their yields. The monitoring trip to Syrdarya region ended by a visit to demonstration pomegranate juice extracting facility established with the Project support to demonstrate modern pomegranate Value Chain post-harvest technologies. The juice extracting facility is run by the pomegranate producers’ cooperative “Dehkkanabad Asl Anori” established with the Project initiative. During the visit an open dialogue was organized with the cooperative members to discuss cooperative challenges and prospectives.
The next field visit is planned to Kashkadarya pilot region in the mid of July 2018.
